When we think of pests invading our home, we usually imagine this happening in the warmer months when insects and other types of wildlife are everywhere. But what about the winter? Most people don’t really think of winter as a time to worry about pests. After all, everything is hibernating or staying in warmer areas underground at this time, right?

Not completely. While it is true that the colder temperatures do bring with them a reduction in wildlife of all sorts, this doesn’t mean our home is out of danger completely. Infestations can happen, even in the coldest of seasons. To help prevent that, here are some of our best methods to help manage potential pest problems in the winter.

Seal it up Tight

When it’s really cold outside, nothing feels better than getting into your warm home Well, animals and insects feel the same way. When your home is pumping out heat, this is going to naturally attract outside pests who want to get out of the cold. This is why you need to make sure your home is sealed tight. Find and fix any cracks, loose mortar, weather stripping or other potentially open areas. Be sure to check where pipes and other outside utilities enter the home. Remember, it only takes a small opening to let in potentially huge problems!

Store Wood Away from Your House

If you have a fireplace, then you know there’s nothing better than having a roaring fire to sit in front of and enjoy. This comfort can actually be a real source of future problems, though, because of the firewood. Remember, up until not too long ago, that wood was part of a living, breathing ecosystem and was probably home to bugs and other small animals. And, in many cases, they might still be there. Don’t assume the wood is pest-free. Inspect each piece before you bring it into your house. What’s more, even if they aren’t living in the wood, the woodpile itself will also offer small rodents and other animals a respite from the cold, so make sure to store all wood at least 20 feet away from your house.

Don’t Ignore Extremities

Finally, when sealing up your house and checking for potential invasion spots, don’t forget to check things like chimneys and attics. These areas often get overlooked -- out of sight is out of mind, right? -- and yet they offer outside pests the easiest access to your home. Make sure your chimney has a screen or other barrier in place that prevents animals from entering and double-check all of your attics and crawl spaces to make sure they are clean, dry and sealed from the outside.
