5 Pests You Don’t Want in Your Business

If you run a business, then you know you can’t have pests crawling around your property. If clients, customers or employees see creepy crawlers moving about, then they’re not going to want to spend time at your business.

To learn about the top five pests that plague businesses that we recommend you watch out for, read on below.

Ants

Ants can be a real problem for businesses. And in New Jersey, businesses tend to get carpenter ants. They strike where there’s old, rotting, decaying or wet wood. These parts of a building are easier to burrow and dig into, so these ants will go where they can most easily. They’ll also follow crumb trails, so make sure your floors are swept clean daily.

To prevent the problem from occurring in the first place, keep your building up-to-date. Wherever there’s wood, you’ll need to replace it whenever it starts to wear down. Don’t give these critters any excuse to nestle into what’s rightfully yours. To check for signs of carpenter ants, look for sawdust piled up on the floor or tiny holes that they’ve carved to gain entry.

Termites

Similar to carpenter ants in that they eat wood and cause structural damage are dreaded termites. They have a bad reputation for a reason: they can destroy a structure, to the point where it becomes a legitimate safety hazard. They’ll target weak, decaying or rotting wood, but they’ll eat much more than that. They’ll chow down on metal, plaster and more. That means no matter what your business is built of, termites could take a bite of it.

If you see your ceilings or floors swell or bulge, or if you smell mildew or can visually identify damage, then you might have a problem. You’ll want a professional service that specializes in termites to assess the situation as soon as possible, since these situations can be dangerous and progress quickly.

While carpenter ants and termites can literally eat your business, there are a few other pests to also be aware of.

Cockroaches

There’s a serious “ick” factor here that could be detrimental to your business success. Cockroaches are nasty things that people hate, so keep standing water or food crumbs to a minimum if you want to prevent these pests from being lured into your business. Beware: they can survive in incredibly adverse environments.

Rodents

If you see droppings scattered about or rodents scurrying around, then you’re going to need to take care of it right away. Nothing scares a customer away quite like: “Ah, a RAT!” Make sure if there are rodents, that you find them and their droppings before anyone else does.

Bees

While they tend to be around only in warm climates or seasons, you’ll definitely find these in New Jersey during the summer. They can build massive nests and swarm unsuspecting people, so ensure your property doesn’t have any signs of bees. Check under eaves, especially near your entrances and exits.

If you find any of these pests, or any other ones, then you need to contact a professional service. That way, you can ensure the safety of your patrons and the success of your business.
