The cold of winter is here, and many people prefer to stay indoors to keep warm. It’s nice to be able to snuggle up in a warm space when the biting winds are waiting for you just behind the door. While many people like to keep out of the cold, there are many winter pests that like to do the same. Your warm home is an inviting place for rodents, rats and mice during the cold winter months. However, there are ways you can winterize your home to keep the pests out while you stay in and get cozy.
Inspect Your Home
If you want to keep pests like rodents, rats and mice out of your home, you will need to make sure there is no entrance for them. Take the time to carefully inspect your home. Step outside to check the exterior of your home to see if there are any spaces or gaps that could be used as an entrance. Do the same thing for the interior of your home as well. Walk though rooms you rarely use, check your boiler room, and even your attic.
Some of the places you should pay close attention to are the areas around your doors, windows, plumbing, wiring and roofing. And keep in mind that even tiny cracks and spaces can be squeezed through.
After close inspection, if you locate any areas of concern, seal them as soon as you can. Try using caulk or steel wool to seal a gap and replace or patch up broken screens.
When looking for holes and cracks in your home, there is another thing you can do to keep pests away. You can trim branches and other plants that are near your home. And you can dispose of piles of foliage on your lawn. These things can be pathways that lead to your home or areas where rodents may hide.
Keep Your Home Clean
Pests are not just looking for a warm space for the cold season, but they are also looking for a place that has a food source to last them through the winter.
Make sure you eliminate anything that could be a food source. That means you need to make sure your house is clean. Don’t leave food out. And clean up any mess that is made right away. Some recyclables like paper should also be properly disposed of in a timely manner because they can be used by rodents to create nests! And that is something that you don’t want happening in your home.
Keep Your Trash Contained
Your home may be clean, but you also need to keep your food contained. Cereal boxes that are opened, pet food in open containers and unsealed garbage bags are an invitation to pests. They may not be on the counter or on the floor, but they are still easily accessible to mice, rats and other rodents.
Keep opened food in sealed containers and garbage bags with food secure in trash bins with lids. Once your garbage is full, be sure to take the trash out and keep it in another sealed container away from your home.
Cold winter months are here, but rodents, mice and rats do not have to be. Keep your home free of unwanted guests this season by following these steps to winterize your home.
