What Are the Different Types of Ants?

Ants are very common pests throughout the country. Enjoying a picnic outside on a spring day can be disturbed by these pests. Kitchen floors can have a trail of ants carrying crumbs to their nests. Carpenter ants can cause damage to wooden structures within the home or outside. There are many different types of ants of which you should be aware. Keep reading to find out more about four different types of ants.

Field Ant

The field ant can be a myriad of different colors, such as black, brown, yellowish-brown or red. This species is mainly found outside within soil, leaves or dead wood. Fortunately, they are not often found inside of the home. It is vital to note that these ants have stingers that can cause pain. Overall, however, they are one of the more harmless species of ants.

Dark Rover Ant

The dark rover ant likes to make its nest near homes, such as near the edges of the grass and under branches or other yard debris. If they nest indoors, they are commonly found in the bathroom or the kitchen. They do not sting but do have large colonies. When they nest within the home it causes quite a disturbance.  Like many ants, the dark rover ant is attracted to sweet substances, so making sure that any sticky spills are cleaned up and all sugary treats are stored properly helps deter them.

Carpenter Ant

Carpenter ants are commonly found throughout the country. There are various types of species of the carpenter ant and they do not all appear the same. Contrary to the common belief, these ants do not eat wood, but rather tunnel through it to make their nests. Fortunately, most carpenter ants make their homes within trees. However, they can be found nesting in lumber or on rooftops and can cause structural damage to homes.

Crazy Ant

These ants are a blackish brown color with long legs and antennae. They form their nests in soil, plants, mulch and garbage. If they nest within the home, they can be found nesting under carpets, in hollow walls or in house plants. They have been given the name “crazy ants” due to the fact that they move around wildly when they are disturbed. It is crucial to note that when they enter the home, they can cause damage. Pest control treatments may be necessary.
